Brock deck

By Pokémon Zone
Last Updated:

Brock, like Blaine and Koga, is a Supporter card tied to specific Pokémon: Onix and Golem, to which it provided 1 energy from the Energy Zone. That makes Brock one of the rare card to be able to accelerate Energy on the very first turn.

Onix is a Basic Pokémon with a whooping 110 HP leaving it out of harm's way from Pikachu ex and Starmie ex, even when powered up with Giovanni. Its Land Crush attack requires and deals a decent 70 damage that Brock can make possible as soon as turn 2.

Golem is the final evolution stage of Geodude. It comes in two versions, an offensive and defensive one:

  • in Genetic Apex, its Double Edge attack deals 150 damage, something that only a few stage 2 Pokémon Ex survives, for the drawback of self-inflicting 50 damage. Although it costs 4 Energy total, it only requires 1 , making it possible to splash it in different colored engines.
  • in Mythical Island, its Guard Press attack deals 120 damage and prevents the next 30 damage that Golem would receive from an attack. At full health, it is capable of resisting any attack in Pokémon TCG Pocket except for Charizard ex's Crimson Storm.

Mythical Island brought a new Graveler, a new Golem and Druddigon to the card pool. Druddiggon is used only as a tank, brought to the frontline to not only protect your Benched Pokémon from aggression but also to damage the Defending Pokémon thanks to its Rough Skin ability. As Mythical Island Golem's Guard Press misses some marks, unlike Genetic Apex's Golem, the extra chip damage can be key in matchups like Mewtwo ex and Arcanine ex. Thanks to the new Graveler, the deck can also do very well without Druddigon in the early game by being able to attack on curve.

Brock Dugtrio variant

  • Games Seen: 5 All Time
  • Win Rate: 40.0% (#331)
  • Seen Rate: 0.0% (#529)

Since Onix and Golem are energy-intensive, this deck crafted by Raven includes the Diglett line to provide early-game action.

With a total cost of just 1 Energy, Dugtrio compensates for its frail build with the added effect of Dig, which has a 50% chance to prevent all damage and effects from attacks by the Defending Pokémon. This "invincibility" state can only be bypassed by a repel effect like Sabrina.

While you keep your opponent busy with Dugtrio, the real purpose is to set up a fully charged Golem, which is pretty much unstoppable once it's online.

Tech cards in Brock decks

Hitmonlee

Brock decks often lack early-game attackers, and Golem (Mythical Island) struggles to one-shot many of the metagame’s dominant Pokémon ex. With solid HP for early-game tanking, a low retreat cost, and an attack that costs just 1 , Hitmonlee is a natural fit to bridge the gap.

While Stretch Kick cannot hit the Active Pokémon, this limitation actually works in Brock decks’ favor. Players often use their Bench to safely evolve key Pokémon into bigger threats. By chipping away with Hitmonlee, Golem becomes far more likely to secure one-shots later in the game, turning small advantages into decisive ones. If the Active Pokémon becomes a problem, Hitmonlee can retreat easily, letting the Geodude line take over.

In a metagame with popular stall options like Druddigon and vulnerable targets like Magikarp, Hitmonlee brings a lot of value to the table.

Weaknesses

  • Onix and Golem are extremely energy-hungry, both in their attack and retreat costs. This makes them slow to deal damage and nearly impossible to retreat, leaving them very vulnerable to Sabrina if they’re benched carelessly or forcefully.
  • Brock doesn’t provide support during the early stages of Golem’s evolution line.
