Metal-type Pokémon in the TCG have often been plagued by a general heaviness in all their stats: slow to attack, with damage output limited by a middling “defensive” counterpart. Gholdengo ex offers an interesting alternative, as it can attack for a single Energy.
Spending Rush deals 40 damage to an opponent's Pokémon at random. However, the selection is made as many times as there are Energy on Gholdengo ex. This makes Gholdengo ex a constant threat at all stages of the game: its damage ramps up every turn, and even more with Energy acceleration.
Although Gholdengo ex itself has a moderate 150 HP, the aforementioned legacy comes in handy by making it tougher. Steel Apron prevents 10 damage from attacks, while Metal Core Barrier even prevents 50 damage once.

- The random nature of Spending Rush also becomes worse the more Pokémon the opponent has on the Bench, as the damage can spread in very unfavorable ways. It may even target the same Pokémon more times than necessary to knock it out, which can lead to very unreliable results.
Orthworm has a somewhat prohibitive retreat cost, which can make pivoting to a well-charged Gholdengo ex difficult. A Supporter like Lyra can help retreat it. The deck’s answer to Pom-Pom Oricorio is Magearna, another Pokémon whose Silver Cannon becomes stronger if a Tool is attached to the opponent’s Active Pokémon.
