As the only fully evolved Sinnoh starter with an ex version, Infernape ex carries high expectations—especially with Charizard ex as the main competition, the only universal "one-shotter" Pokémon in TCG Pocket so far. Fortunately, Infernape ex has carved out its own niche with a distinct playstyle.
The Chimchar line isn't afraid to go in the Active spot from the start, unlike the Charmander line. Every stage of its evolution can attack on curve even when going first. This means Infernape ex can unleash Flare Blitz as early as turn 3, dealing 140 damage, right after Monferno's Fiery Punch lands 30 damage on turn 2. This unprecedented damage output secures Infernape ex a legitimate role in the metagame.

- Infernape ex has currently no natural partner to be associated with, for instance one to retreat into after using Flare Blitz. This creates a paradox: its ideal partner needs to be bulky enough to buy time for evolution but also aggressive to be a cheap threat on its own.
- While Flare Blitz damage output is strong, it falls short against the bulkiest threats in the format and 140 HP Pokémon equipped with Giant Cape. Since Flare Blitz discards all Fire Energy, failing to secure a knockout is terrible in terms of tempo, especially if the opponent uses a relevant healing effect on the next turn.
