The Lake Guardian Trio of Mesprit, Uxie, and Azelf are an interesting set of cards that relies on each member to be in play in order for Mesprit to dish out a massive 160 damage onto anything unfortunate enough to be in-front of it. With each of the cards coming in either of the Space-Time Smackdown packs, they are relatively easy to gather copies of and build a deck for even a new player.
Each of the pixies are delicate Basic Pokémon with 70 HP with a small retreat cost of . However each provides their own unique benefits so let's dive into detail on the three cards and understand them better to elevate our play and deckbuilding; starting with Mesprit.
Mesprit
The star of the show, and with good reason: 160 damage will outright KO Pokémon ex with such as Exeggutor ex, Palkia ex, Mewtwo ex, or even Darkrai ex after a Giant's Cape! Understandably, Supreme Blast is a very powerful attack... Mesprit however has it discarding all energy after use, meaning you'll have to build it back up again –with the inability to power it up for multiple blasts preemptively.
While Mesprit is powerful, it is only worth a single point: sometimes building up one Mesprit and using your second copy as a hit of protection is the way to go!
Uxie
Uxie is the Energy acceleration engine for the deck, providing extra energy while doing a little bit of damage. The dream hand consists of an X Speed and Dawn after attacking once, allowing you to use Supreme Blast in just two turns!
If you have a second Uxie in hand, it can be tempting to just keep your foot on the gas and just power up till your first Uxie goes down, but a steady hand should be practiced. Remember you'll need a copy of Uxie alive and well on the bench to even fire off an attack with Mesprit, and you often need two shots to win the whole match.
Azelf
Last of the trio, Azelf is a rather weak attacker that is able to choose to attack the opponent's bench. While it seems to lack a direct synergy, it manages to have an noticeable impact by allowing you to pressure benched Pokémon that would otherwise harbor enough HP over the 160 threshold that Mesprit hits.
Slipping past an opponent's tank in the active isn't just the end of it, Azelf may end up the difference maker by holding onto a spare energy for a Dawn play, or just allowing itself to be knocked out to save Uxie and Mesprit... With a second Azelf ready to hit the bench from the hand of course!

Tech Cards in Lake Trio deck
Giratina
A tank that can allow you to swap in any of the lake trio thanks to its Levitate ability, Giratina manages to have multiple synergies with cards such as Dawn or Mythical Slab, all the while being a tank that only gives up a single point. Although, 3 energy cost for a mere 70 damage is a bit of an ask –and a somewhat frustrating one at that.
Mew ex
With its Genome Hacking, Mew ex can provide itself as an alternative win condition when up against the likes of Charizard or Palkia, while also being a reasonable tank: qualities that the lake trio appreciates. Finding room for Budding Expeditioner can be a challenge however, along with a 2 point reward if defeated.
Weaknesses
- ALL OR NOTHING. With little to no benefit on you going first, the low hp of the trio, and the strict requirements for Supreme Blast... It's not unlikely that you can be shut down very quickly by just about any deck.
- On a razor's edge. There's plenty of setup you'll have to perform while playing the trio, with decision making and hard predictions other decks simply don't have to worry about.
