While the B series puts the spotlight on Mega Pokémon ex, the standard Magnezone ex may have been one of the most anticipated releases in Pokémon TCG Pocket. The regular Magnezone from Space-Time Smackdown has remained relevant for 15 months, thanks to the original Magneton from Genetic Apex and its Energy-accelerating ability, Volt Charge. Thus, a two-point upgrade is a major event in the competitive Pocket environment.

“Upgrade” is the right word to describe Magnezone ex. It closely mirrors the regular Magnezone: its Storm Blade attack deals 20 more damage while still requiring you to discard a Energy, and it comes with an extra 40 HP. These improvements are enough to give the Magnet Pokémon new life. Suicune ex now falls within one-shot range, and Magnezone ex can take more hits than its regular version. Overall, the evolution line is set to remain relevant throughout both the A and B series.

The most obvious partner for Magnezone ex is any other Magnezone, a trusted Pokémon ever since they were introduced in the game. To maximise the point mapping, they're often played with another strong Pokémon.

- While the extra bulk and damage are meaningful upgrades, Magnezone ex doesn’t reach many new benchmarks in the metagame. Aside from Suicune ex, most major Pokémon can withstand 130 damage. Likewise, the HP increase has limited impact. In the current meta, Mega Altaria ex, Chien-Pao ex, and Hydreigon all deal up to 130 damage: numbers that regular Magnezone can already survive, while only giving up one point when knocked out.
- Unlike the regular version, Magnezone ex is almost impossible to splash into decks that don’t run Energy in the Energy Zone. Storm Blade requires three specific Energy, whereas regular Magnezone can reliably attack at least twice using only Volt Charge. That was one of the main strength of the previous decks running Magnezone.
