Mega Altaria ex was one of the first three Megas to be revealed, and probably the least impressive at first glance: it has lower HP than both Mega Gyarados ex and Mega Blaziken ex –a crucial shortcoming as losing any means losing the game, its attack is weaker, and it lacks the fan appeal.
Yet, it establishes itself as one of the best Mega Pokémon thanks to its highly efficient 2-Energy attack, capable of dealing up to 130 damage as early as turn 4. This power was further enhanced by Lisia, who not only fills up the Bench but also searches for its pre-evolution, Swablu. Belonging to the Psychic tribe due to its in-game Fairy typing, Mega Altaria ex also benefits from the strong support available to Psychic decks (Peculiar Plaza, Meloetta...).

The sleep version of Mega Altaria ex got even more support with Paradox Drive in Espeon, a Pokémon as well which Hypnoblast attack inflicts the Sleep status for just a single Energy. The synergy goes even better as Eevee (Mega Rising) can be searched with Lisia, just like Swablu and Igglytuff. Thanks to Darkrai's Bad Dreams ability, every turn of sleep is an extra 20 damage, and a potential turn skip if the opponent cannot cure it, force a switch or evolve their Active Pokémon.

This version pairs Mega Altaria ex with another in Gourgeist. Gourgeist is a rather bulky Pokémon with an inexpensive Soul Shot attack that deals 70 damage on just one Energy, enough to knock out Pom Pom Oricorio on turn 3! It comes with a drawback to discard a card from your hand, which can actually be used strategically to make your opponent's Copycat worse and yours better. Being a Stage 1, Gourgeist also benefits from Training Area to raise the damage of its attack.

The Mega Shine variant of Mega Altaria ex gains value from the very start, as Swablu’s Sing puts the opponent’s Active Pokémon to sleep, which in turn triggers Darkrai’s Dark Dreams ability to deal 20 damage to a sleeping Pokémon at the end of each turn.
To maximize these interactions, the deck also runs Igglybuff, which can inflict Sleep from turn 1 without requiring any Energy, for an immediate 30 damage plus the Sleep status.
This setup naturally prepares Mega Altaria ex as a finisher, while the opponent’s Active Pokémon loses HP and potentially turns by remaining asleep in the Active spot.
