In Pokémon TCG Pocket, Metal-types have always been defined by damage reduction, and that identity has usually worked well. So far, however, it has not been truly successful. Mega Steelix ex changes that dynamic. Its Adamantine Rolling attack deals a solid 120 damage and reduces the damage Mega Steelix ex takes by 20 on the next turn, while also removing its weakness. With 220 HP and access to Heavy Helmet to further reduce incoming damage, Mega Steelix ex becomes extremely difficult to remove once established.
Mega Steelix ex also indirectly benefits from support dating back to Genetic Apex. Brock accelerates one Energy to Onix, which helps pay up to two Energy required for Adamantine Rolling.

- Once Mega Steelix ex is in the Active spot, committing to it is difficult to reverse. Its retreat cost is very expensive, and setting up another Mega Steelix ex on the Bench takes a long time.
- At face value, Adamantine Rolling has poor numbers. Dealing 120 damage for four Energy on a Stage 1 Pokémon is low, and this feels even worse when Brock does not appear in your hand early in the game.
