Paldean Clodsire ex is a new addition to the line of Venoshock users, an attack that increases in power when the opponent's Active Pokémon is poisoned. It marks the first time a Venoshock user deals more than 100 damage for just 2 on a Stage 1 Pokémon.

Paldean Wooper conveniently sets up a powered-up Venoshock thanks to its Poison Jab, which deals 10 damage and poisons the Defending Pokémon. If the opponent’s Active Pokémon doesn’t immediately retreat or evolve, it can take up to 160 damage by turn 4 through Poison Jab, poison damage, and Venoshock, a brutal outcome against decks built around big Basic Pokémon ex with high retreat costs. With the release of Celestial Guardians, attaching Poison Barb to Paldean Clodsire ex makes it all the more complicated to pressure it, as it can retaliate for a full power Venoshock attack. Venoshock’s base damage of 60 is also good enough to pressure most Basic Pokémon.

On top of that, Paldean Clodsire ex comes with a bulky 160 HP, which is high for a Stage 1 Pokémon ex.

- Poison strategies can be dodged by retreating or evolving, and they usually require a two-turn setup. Grafaiai improves this, but being a Stage 1 with a coin flip–based ability adds inconsistency.

- Venoshock’s base damage is middling and won’t threaten Pokémon ex on its own. After scoring a knockout with poison, Clodsire ex often underperforms, and its retreat cost of 3 makes it nearly impossible to cycle back into another poison setup.

- Arceus ex, one of the most popular attacker of the format, is impervious to Status thanks to its Fabled Luster ability.
