Historically, Lightning types have been defined by their Basic Pokémon ex, and Tapu Koko ex becomes the fifth in line. It follows the same aggressive trend: its Plasma Hurricane attack deals 20 damage and can be used as early as turn 2, while also charging a free Energy. This sets up its Mach Bolt attack for the next turn, dealing 90 damage without any requirement other than the enregy cost. It's a direct upgrade from the original Pikachu ex, with 10 more HP and overall greater efficiency, making it the most aggressive Basic Pokémon to date. Like its predecessors, it benefits from a single retreat cost, making it easy to switch out when needed.

- While the Plasma Hurricane into Mach Bolt sequence is excellent when starting the game with Tapu Koko ex in the Active spot, it's far less effective later. At that point, powering up a Benched Tapu Koko ex with 3 Energy just to use Mach Bolt becomes a bad investment for the damage it offers.
