Whimsicott ex was printed in Mega Rising, but the release of Crimson Blaze shines a new light on this innocuous, fluffy Pokémon. At first glance, nothing is very exciting about a Stage 1 Pokémon ex with 140 HP and a 2-Energy Grass Knot attack that deals a meek 40 base damage, with only a slight upside to deal more damage based on the Retreat Cost of your opponent’s Pokémon.
However, Crimson Blaze introduced Quick-Grow Extract, which helps Whimsicott ex hit the field much more consistently and improves the overall consistency of whatever engine you pair it with. At the same time, stronger Pokémon are being printed, and their Retreat Costs are increasing as well: think of Pokémon like legendary dogs or Mega Steelix ex.
Whimsicott ex also lines up well against one of the top-tier decks in the format, Mega Absol ex. Thanks to Mega Absol ex’s Weakness, Whimsicott ex can two-shot it, and it can even one-shot any Hydreigon that has previously used its Ability. Finally, Whimsicott ex can be made sturdier thanks to the abundance of HP support available to types, such as Erika, Leaf Cape, and similar cards.

- Grass Knot also has very poor base damage and often fails to pressure many Pokémon. A large part of what makes decks competitive is how easily their Pokémon can move from the Active Spot to the Bench, which directly limits Grass Knot’s damage ceiling.
