Attacking for is a big advantage for a Pokémon since it fits into any deck, regardless of the Energy they run. This versatility also comes with downsides, like lower damage, an overcosted attack, or weak stats. Yanmega ex raises the previous bar on these Pokémon with Air Slash, dealing 120 damage at the cost of discarding a random Energy. That much damage for 3 Energy is rare, even for a Pokémon ex—only Arcanine ex and Machamp ex match it. But unlike Machamp ex, Yanmega ex needs just one Evolution and works with any Energy type.
Yanmega ex is now the universal generic beatdown attacker, slotting into any deck that needs a heavy hitter that comes online early with minimal investment. And unlike past options like Wigglytuff ex or Pidgeot ex, it can also hit for Weakness. Many recent Pokémon are weak to ; Air Slash is an exact one-shot against both Weavile ex and Darkrai ex, two of the most popular decks of the Space-Time Smackdown expansion.

- As Air Slash discards an Energy from Yanmega ex, you've got to constantly refill to be able to attack on next turn. That takes away from other Pokémon and that over committment could easily cost you the game when Yanmega ex gets knocked out.
- In a grindy game, Air Slash feels slightly lackluster against bigger Pokémon that can, in turn, easily one-shot Yanmega ex (Mewtwo ex, Charizard ex...).
